In the year 2014 Bonne Reijn (1990) created the first line for Bonne Suits: black and white two piece suits. He wanted to create something that can be worn at every occasion by every person, either poor or rich. A clothing item that can be a staple item in anyone’s life and in every wardrobe, suitable for informal and formal occasions and something that is made to last and from high quality. Bonne Reijn succeeded. Nowadays his suits are available in multiple colors and editions. His suits are widely famous in Amsterdam and are worn all over the world by young, old, men, women, everything in between, by rappers, by the LGBTQ-community, punkers, intellectuals, by housemoms, curators, hairdressers, bakers and artists.
For Outsiderwear Bonne works with seven different artists from different backgrounds. All seven artists have been painting or drawing on the clothes of Bonne Suits. With Antoine Monod de Froideville (1976) they have been working on series of longsleeves. Antoine makes abstract works and is fascinated by everything that contradicts each other. He examines these paradoxes in his work. He creates patterns that repeat themselves and draws inspiration from religion and nature.
Bonne collaborates with two artists from the Outsider Art Gallery in Amsterdam: Sijtse Keur and Norbert de Jong. Sijtse is a true Amsterdammer and fanatical artist, he paints from his heart. Sijtse has been working on a suit, an overcoat and a jacket. The work of Norbert de Jong is intuitive, imploring and Romantic. The canal houses of Amsterdam often form the decor of his work. That these two artists are now using a Bonne Suit as their canvasses is a very logical but also exciting match. Norbert has also been working on multiple clothes.
Alexxx was born in the Sovjet-Union and came to Amsterdam in 1994. He has a history of addiction and has lived on the streets for a big part of his life. When he spiraled into depression in 1999, someone recommended him to start drawing. He got a ballpen and a piece of paper. With this new weapon he started to develop his own way of drawing. Alexxx is now a ballpen artist. He designed a very unique Bonne Suit and drew on the white cotton with just a ballpen.
Hans Klastat was a model in the ‘80s and is a very versatile artist. In his young years he used to hang out with famous artists like Karel Appel. He painted with them and was a youngster with loads of talent. Hans also designed his own Bonne Suits.
Finally, there are two other artists from Rotterdam Bonne collaborated with. Minke de Fonkert is the first artist that started working in the Gallery-Atelier de Herenplaats. She has been working there for nearly 30 years now. She paints and draws and uses multiple techniques and materials. She finds the reasons for her work in her own experiences and the insanely great monsters and animals from her dreams and fantasies. Her work is very free and energetic and this shows on her designs.
Brenda van Vliet has allready designed her own clothing before. She works very precise and figurative. Her style is completely unique and pulls you inside an unknown fantasy world.
All of the Artist Suits and longsleeves are shown from the 10th of July in @DROOG in the Staalstraat in Amsterdam.
